What is a GST invoice?

A GST invoice is a record of a taxable supply that explains who sold what, to whom, and for what amount. It brings business identity, item details and tax information together so the seller and customer can understand the same transaction. The invoice is also part of the seller’s records; it should agree with the order, delivery or work actually performed rather than simply look like a professional bill.

For an Indian business, preparing the document starts with accurate names, addresses and registration details where applicable. Give it a number from your own sequence, check the date, and describe each product or service clearly. Quantities, prices, discounts and tax amounts should be readable rather than hidden inside an unexplained total. Requirements vary with the supplier and supply, so review the particulars relevant to your situation.

The tax breakdown matters as much as the final amount. An intra-state supply generally involves CGST and SGST, or UTGST where applicable, while an inter-state supply generally involves IGST. The correct treatment depends on the transaction and place-of-supply rules. FreeBiller’s GST calculator can help with arithmetic, but you must choose the appropriate rate and check the breakdown against your own facts.

A standard GST invoice is different from a quotation sent before agreement and from a receipt acknowledging payment. It is also different from the government e-invoicing process. Making a PDF on a website does not register that invoice with an Invoice Registration Portal. FreeBiller does not generate an IRN or the government e-invoice QR, and businesses that need that workflow must complete it separately.

This home page helps you choose a tool. Open the invoice generator for ordinary invoicing, the GST bill generator for a Tax Invoice starting point, or a separate receipt or quotation tool for those documents. Enter real details, inspect the preview, and keep the exported PDF in your own records. Browser drafts and recent history are convenient on the same device, but they are not a cloud backup or a complete accounting ledger.
